Mary-Beth in her own words

About Mary-Beth

Mary-Beth, with her husband Dr Doug Smith, raised their two children in Poland, both of whom graduated from Poland Regional High School. Mary-Beth grew up rooted in community and dedicated her career to teaching at Central Maine Community College and The University of New England, making sure her students were equipped to succeed in their field. Mary-Beth is committed to making sure Maine’s younger generations are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to build stable lives here in Maine. In fact, as a Poland Select Board member she has served as the liaison to the RSU 16 School Board.

When Mary-Beth joined the Select Board she knew she would be accountable, along with fellow Board members, for the funding and oversight of the Police Department. Instead of sitting behind her desk and making decisions without knowing their impact, Mary-Beth got in the cruiser and rode along until she had a sense of what the day-to-day work of Poland PD is like. Mary-Beth works to understand the people behind the policy questions, and will do that every day for us in Augusta.

From her time as a Poland select-person, Mary-Beth knows that government only works when it is accountable to the people it serves. During her tenure the Select Board has made sure the people of Poland can see where every tax dollar is going and have a voice in how their money is used. Mary-Beth worked hard to conserve tax dollars, so local property taxes have remained stable while town services have expanded.

Mary-Beth knows how much we need a State Representative who can listen, learn about you, and understand where you’re coming from and where you’re trying to go. She is running for State Representative to give people in small towns like Mechanic Falls and Poland a voice in Augusta, so our young people can build a life here in Maine, and so our grandparents can keep living the way life should be.

About

In Support of Mary-Beth

“I have served on the Town of Poland Select Board with Mary-Beth for 4 years. She takes the time to respectfully listen to all sides of an issue before making thoughtful, well reasoned decisions. May-Beth will bring this same thoughtful decision making process to the Maine House in her representation of the citizens of district 87.”

Stan Tetenman, Poland Select Board, Small Business Owner

“One of the things I have found most impressive about Mary-Beth in the many years that I have known her is that she is willing to calmly listen to all sides of an issue and form her own decision. She has taught me through example how to remain calm in the face of anger, respectfully listen, and at the same time stand up for issues she finds important. I am confident she will be able to bring these skills to Augusta and represent District 87 with an open mind and integrity.”

On the Issues

Equipping our children for success

Mary-Beth has spent decades working with young Mainers to help them achieve their educational goals. She understands the power a good public school and access to affordable community college can have, and will work to ensure our schools have the funding they need for each student to reach their potential. Mary-Beth will also work to make sure that there are good paying jobs with benefits waiting for our kids when they graduate, so they can build their lives right here in Maine.

Making Maine’s economy work for all Mainers

Mary-Beth has spent the last six years listening to Poland residents talk about the challenges they face heating their homes, feeding their children, and dealing with property taxes. Mary-Beth knows how hard the people in Mechanic Falls and Poland work, and that a lifetime of hard work should mean a worry-free retirement in the home you’ve worked so hard for. She’ll work hard to keep taxes low and help seniors stay in their own homes.

Working for the people of Mechanic Falls and Poland

Mary-Beth starts by listening and builds from there. From her years of community service teaching, volunteering at St. Mary’s, and serving on the Select Board, she understands what it takes to work with people from all walks of life. Now, more than ever, we need a Representative who will listen first and act on what matters most to the people in our towns.
